Underlay (Embroidery):  Stitches used to make the initial laydown of final stitches.  A heavy underlay is often used on towels to secure the nap of the towel so the little loops won't poke through.  Sometimes the digitizer chooses to put a heavy underlay on a project that has a bright contrast of colors between the garment and thread.
